We hear it looks as though Saints FS Darren Sharper will get an opportunity to gauge his value on the open market. Sharper, who will become an unrestricted free agent on March 5, felt slighted by the Saints' decision to not use the franchise tag on him, but head coach Sean Payton said he still would like Sharper to be on the team in 2010. New Orleans isn't going to overpay for the 34-year-old's services, though. "Darren's been a big part of our success and someone who's certainly helped us tremendously," Payton said at the Combine Feb. 26. "So, you know, the free-agency period is getting ready to begin. And he's a guy that we want on our team. The key is just (GM) Mickey Loomis and Darren's agent (Joel Segal) really going through the process and getting that kind of stuff done. But there's still plenty of time (to work out a deal)." Sharper made nine interceptions last season.
