INDIANAPOLIS — Lions head coach Jim Schwartz shied away from a question about the status of unrestricted free-agent QB Daune Culpepper and his standing with the team.

"We're still not at free agency right now," Schwartz said. "I think backup quarterback is an important position when you have a young player such as Matt Stafford. To have an experienced player behind him is an important thing."

At season's end, GM Martin Mayhew hinted that Culpepper could return to the team. Schwartz never mentioned Culpepper by name in his response to the question, focusing more on what he seeks in a backup QB and how the team might go about getting one.

"I think that — I'll sort of answer that the way I have answered a lot of other questions — we are going to take every avenue we have to improve this team and not say yes or no or make that decision before we get a good look at all that's available and work that way," Schwartz said. "But I think we are open to just about everything for our team."
