The Texans have awarded head coach Gary Kubiak with a new three-year contract, the Houston Chronicle reported late Tuesday night.

Owner Bob McNair tore up the contract that Kubiak signed when he joined the team in 2006, which had one year remaining on a five-year, $10 million deal. The Chronicle reported no financials terms of the new contract, and the Texans had yet to confirm the signing.

Kubiak had the option of signing through 2013, the Chronicle reported, but he opted to have his contract conclude the same year as those of his assistant coaches — 2012. Two new assistants — offensive coordinator Rick Dennison and QB coach Greg Knapp — recently signed three-year contracts, and the returning assistants will receive two-year extensions through 2012.

Houston GM Rick Smith's second contract also expires in 2012.

Under the leadership of Smith and Kubiak, the Texans have finished 6-10, 8-8, 8-8 and 9-7. They won their final four games of '09 to achieve the first winning season ever for the franchise and barely missed qualifying for the playoffs.
