Jets head coach Rex Ryan has apologized for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event Saturday night in Florida.

A cell-phone camera captured Ryan making the gesture as he was booed while doing a television interview at Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., the home of the NHL's Florida Panthers. The booing was likely the product of a verbal feud Ryan has had with Dolphins LB Channing Crowder.

"It was stupid and inappropriate," Ryan said in a statement released by the Jets. "I wouldn't accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players, and it's unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets' organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere."

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said in the statement that the team would handle the incident internally. Ryan may be subject to discipline from the league for violating its personal-conduct policy.
