It’s official. Confirming steady rumors the last couple of weeks, Cardinals QB Kurt Warner has announced his retirement after 12 NFL seasons. Warner had said after the Cardinals’ playoff loss to the Saints — a game in which he was temporarily removed after a vicious hit from Saints DE Bobby McCray — that he was leaning in one direction, but wanted some time to decompress before making a final decision.

With Warner now out of the mix, the stage is set for former first-round draft pick Matt Leinart to take over under center for the Cardinals. Pro Football Weekly will have much more on the Warner retirement and its ramifications later this afternoon.
