ESPN reported late Saturday that the Raiders will retain head coach Tom Cable for another season, although the team maintains that no decision has been reached.
The team has been mum on Cable's status since the end of the regular season, but owner Al Davis has been interviewing potential assistants and reportedly making some inquiries about the availability of possible head coaches. On Friday he hired ex-Giants assistant Mike Waufle to coach the Raiders' defensive line.
"We've never made any statements that the head coach would not be back," senior executive John Herrera said in a statement issued by the Raiders. "That has been media speculation from the beginning. We've consistently stated that we're going through an evaluation process to determine the direction that the organization needs to go. The process is ongoing, and it has not reached a conclusion."
Cable and Davis reportedly have met at least twice since the end of the season to discuss Cable's future. Cable has one year remaining on his contract, and some teams have been reluctant to make new commitments to coaches because of the uncertain labor situation.
