When Patriots QB Tom Brady and Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (a first alternate) passed on playing in the Pro Bowl because of injuries, it opened the door for Texans QB Matt Schaub (a second alternate) to play in Miami on Jan. 31. Schaub, 28, had never before made the Pro Bowl, but he suspected he might get the call as a late replacement, so he resumed working out after taking a little time off after the Texans' final regular-season game. In a conference call with reporters, Schaub, one of five Texans to be named to the Pro Bowl, said he was "extremely excited" to play in Miami and noted that the honor "represents a lot of good things we're doing down here in Houston with our team." Schaub, who started all 16 games for the first time in his career, praised his blocking. "My offensive line, my backs and my line, when they were called on to block, did an exceptional job of keeping me upright," he said.
