Bucs concerned about Penn’s conditioning habits

The Buccaneers are expected to re-sign OLT Donald Penn, we hear, but sources say it would be no surprise if the team spends an early draft pick on a left tackle this offseason as well. Penn will become a restricted free agent in March and he likely will receive a moderate tender from Tampa Bay. He put on weight and was not in good shape at the end of the 2009 campaign, and the team would like to see him make an effort to take better care of himself. Penn, who turns 27 in April, is not a workout warrior by any means, observers say, and the Bucs want a blind-side protector for young QB Josh Freeman that they can rely on for years to come. While the position is not a top priority for the team this offseason, Penn's lack of conditioning could lead the team to select a player at some point in the draft that could eventually replace him.
