Saints RB Deuce McAllister, who was re-signed by the team days before its playoff win over the Cardinals, announced he will retire Tuesday, according to reports.
McAllister was out of the NFL for almost a full year before the Saints re-signed him and made him a team captain for Sunday's win over Arizona. He was inactive for the game and is not in playing shape.
The Saints need to use his roster spot to sign a receiver because of WR Robert Meachem's ankle injury. Meachem's status for the NFC Championship game vs. the Vikings is uncertain.
"If I get another shot (in the future), then so be it," McAllister said, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "But even before all this occurred, I was leaning toward retiring anyway.
"I was hoping to play again, but I may need another surgery on my knee if I go that direction, and I don't want to do that."
