The Chargers can point to many reasons on both sides of the ball for their dramatic improvement in the second half of 2009, but we hear a number of players pointed out this week that an upgrade in run defense was a major factor. "We're significantly better," DE Luis Castillo said. "It doesn't always translate in numbers. I think a lot of times it translates to not giving up the big play. There's a significant difference obviously, because we went through so much turnover." Injuries up front, especially the one to NT Jamal Williams, caused the Bolts to go through multiple lineup changes, but they figured out a formula that worked as the season progressed, allowing 25 fewer yards per game in the second half than they did in the first eight games. "We've learned that we have to stop the run collectively," OLB Shaun Phillips said. "It's a collective thing, and all 11 guys have one goal, and that's to stop the run."
