Former Browns head coach Romeo Crennel is expected to join the Chiefs' coaching staff, according to The Bergen Record.

Although the report did not indicate which position Crennel would take, it's possible that Kansas City could name him defensive coordinator. He was part of three Super Bowl titles as Patriots' defensive coordinator from 2001-04, working with Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis during his time in New England.

Under coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who came to Kansas City along with head coach Todd Haley from Arizona in 2009, the Chiefs' defense struggled, finishing 30th in yards allowed, 31st in rushing and 29th in scoring. Haley already has made changes to his coaching staff this offseason, and Pendergast could be the next to go.

Crennel, 62, apparently chose K.C. over the Giants, who also were interested in his services. Although he had a 24-40 record in four seasons as Cleveland's head coach before getting fired after the '08 campaign, Crennel has been coaching in the NFL for nearly 30 years and has proven to be a quality defensive assistant.
