Fixing a defense that fell from 15th in the league in 2008 to 22nd in '09 will be one of the Dolphins' most important tasks this offseason — and head coach Tony Sparano has decided to take on that task with a new defensive coordinator. While sources expected defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni to return for the 2010 campaign last week, the Dolphins announced he had been fired Monday. Pasqualoni is highly regarded throughout league circles and is considered a great teacher of young players. Sparano clearly felt that wasn't enough to keep him on his staff. Miami's defense endured injuries to multiple key starters in '09, but some healthy personnel didn't perform well, either. Observers indicated the Dolphins needed a coverage safety more than a new coordinator, as Gibril Wilson, a free-agent addition in the offseason, proved to be a disappointment. Miami also will have to make decisions on whether to cut OLB Joey Porter and re-sign OLB Jason Taylor and NT Jason Ferguson.
