Welcome to Week 17 of the 2009 NFL season. Each week I'll be revealing my Stock Exchange starting lineup to you, analyzing the players I've purchased, how much I paid for them and their matchup for that week. I'll also be including the starting lineups of five other PFW editors to give you a good idea of which players we like in that week's slate of games. Hopefully this analysis will help you make the best possible lineup and get you on your way to winning the $2,500 grand prize. Good luck!
Team Blunda
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger ($19.63) at Dolphins
With many of the top fantasy passers getting rested in Week 17, Big Ben is one of the most reliable options with the Steelers playing for their playoff lives. Not far removed from throwing for 503 yards, he should light up a Dolphins secondary that has surrendered 20 TD passes this season, putting an exclamation point on a huge statistical campaign.
Week purchased: Week 17
Bears QB Jay Cutler ($15.27) at Lions
In what has been a fairly ugly season, Cutler had maybe his best outing last Monday night against the Vikings, throwing for 273 yards with four TDs and just one interception. I expect more of the same this week against the Lions, whose league-worst pass defense is getting torched for 265.4 yards per game and has yielded 31 TDs through the air.
Week purchased: Week 17
Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew ($27.80) at Browns
Jones-Drew might have been held in check last week by the Patriots, but it doesn't take away from a Pro Bowl season in which he has scored 16 times. With the Jaguars still fighting for a playoff spot, M.J.D. should be at his best this week against the Browns, who are getting gashed for 145.5 yards per contest on the ground.
Week purchased: Week 17
Jets RB Thomas Jones ($20.34) vs. Bengals
Jones again came through with a nice outing for me last week, running for 105 yards and a TD at Indy. While I usually wouldn't start a back against the stout Bengals run defense, it's likely that Cincy will be resting some regulars this week, giving Jones the opportunity to face backups in this win-and-they're-in game for the Jets. I like his chances to finish strong.
Week purchased: Week 14
Texans WR Andre Johnson ($29.39) vs. Patriots
After back-to-back games of 190-plus yards, Johnson wasn't quite as prolific last week, but he did manage to find paydirt and rack up 71 yards. With the Texans still with playoff hopes, I think Johnson is going to be a monster this Sunday against the Patriots, who have surrendered 23 TD passes. Lately, nobody has been able to contain the league's best receiver in '09.
Week purchased: Week 13
Vikings WR Sidney Rice ($14.60) vs. Giants
Rice didn't do much for most of Monday night's game against the Bears, but he salvaged his night by grabbing the game-tying TD in the dying seconds. After making his first Pro Bowl, Rice should be come up big-time in a game the Vikings would love to have to give themselves a shot at the bye. The Giants' secondary has been awful recently and has yielded 27 TD tosses on the season.
Week purchased: Week 10
Cowboys WR Miles Austin ($21.44) vs. Eagles
Austin's touchdown streak ended last week at four games, but nine catches for 92 yards isn't a bad consolation. As hot as any receiver in the league since his breakout Week Five, Austin will make his first Pro Bowl appearance this season. Even though the Eagles held him to one catch (a 49-yard TD) back in Week Nine, he's playing too well to be held down in the season finale.
Week purchased: Week 15
Eagles TE Brent Celek ($11.95) at Cowboys
Celek picked a great time to have his best fantasy outing of the season, grabbing four passes for 121 yards and a TD last week vs. the Broncos. One of the most productive players at his position, Celek will look to go out with a bang this Sunday in a huge game against the Cowboys, whom he scored against earlier in 2009. Here's hoping for a grand finish.
Week purchased: Week Nine
Saints PK Garrett Hartley ($6.75) at Panthers
For the second consecutive week, Hartley only netted me five points last Sunday as the Saints' offense was somehow held in check by the Bucs. Even though this week's game means nothing to them with the No. 1 seed already locked up, the Saints say they're going to play this like a must-win contest, meaning Hartley should get plenty of scoring opportunities.
Week purchased: Week 15
San Francisco 49ers defense ($6.35) at Rams
Going with the Niners proved to be a solid decision last week, as their "D" forced six turnovers against the Lions. After that effort, I figured I'd stick with them in Week 17 at St. Louis, an offense that has really struggled lately with rookie Keith Null under center. San Fran should close out the season by adding to its impressive 33 takeaways.
