It hasn't been the season the Giants or Chris Canty expected from either one. The team has struggled defensively much of the time, and Canty hasn't fulfilled his promise with an $8 million-a-year deal yet, mostly because of a calf injury that hindered him for much of the season. But there are other things that have held him back. He is playing a relatively new spot at defensive tackle (he was a 3-4 end in Dallas) and even has slid over to the nose at times, which is a slightly unusual assignment for such a tall, high-cut player as Canty. Head coach Tom Coughlin said Canty has "fundamentally" done a good job, especially holding the point against double-teams. But Coughlin appeared to suggest that Canty still is adjusting to the pre-snap sliding the Giants do and that he still needs to make sure his pad level remains low enough to be effective.
