Welcome to Week 16 of the 2009 NFL season. Each week I'll be revealing my Stock Exchange starting lineup to you, analyzing the players I've purchased, how much I paid for them and their matchup for that week. I'll also be including the starting lineups of five other PFW editors to give you a good idea of which players we like in that week's slate of games. Hopefully this analysis will help you make the best possible lineup and get you on your way to winning the $2,500 grand prize. Good luck!
Team Blunda
Saints QB Drew Brees ($44.01) vs. Buccaneers
Brees had one of his roughest outings of the season last week, turning the ball over three times against the Cowboys as the Saints lost their first game of 2009. He still managed to throw for 298 yards and a TD, though, so it wasn't terrible. I'm much less worried about his matchup this week with the Bucs, whom he tossed three TDs against earlier this season.
Week purchased: Week Six
49ers QB Alex Smith ($6.60) vs. Lions
I'm continuing my cheap No. 2 QB strategy by going with Smith this week. He didn't exactly tear it up last week against the Eagles, throwing three picks, but it should be a different story against the Lions. Detroit ranks dead last in the league against the pass, so Smith and the Niners should have little trouble picking them apart through the air.
Week purchased: Week 16
Bengals RB Cedric Benson ($16.00) vs. Chiefs
This is a matchup play if there ever was one. Although Benson hasn't found paydirt since Week Nine, he takes on a Chiefs run defense Sunday that's been absolutely demolished in recent weeks, giving up an average of 265.3 yards in their last three outings. Benson should be quite busy in this one, piling up a ton of carries, yardage and, hopefully, TDs.
Week purchased: Week 16
Jets RB Thomas Jones ($20.34) at Colts
Jones definitely fell a bit flat for me last week, running for just 52 yards on 19 carries against the Falcons. I think he can bounce back, however, vs. the Colts, who are merely average against the run. As the focal point of the offense, Jones will have to touch the ball a lot for the Jets to have a chance in this one, so expect just that to happen.
Week purchased: Week 14
Texans WR Andre Johnson ($29.39) at Dolphins
Wow. That's about all I can say about the play of Johnson, who once again came through with a monster effort last week. He eclipsed 190 yards for the second straight game, catching nine passes for 196 yards; the only thing he didn't do was score. Johnson now has a ridiculous lead over the rest of the league in receiving yardage, and I think he'll add to it Sunday vs. a shaky Miami pass "D."
Week purchased: Week 13
Vikings WR Sidney Rice ($14.60) at Bears
Rice didn't blow up last week, but he chipped in with a respectable four catches for 69 yards against Carolina's solid pass defense. I don't see him having as much trouble with the Bears this Monday night, as Chicago has surrendered a whopping 25 TD passes. I'm also not worried about his QB, as I expect Brett Favre to rebound big-time this week.
Week purchased: Week 10
Cowboys WR Miles Austin ($21.44) at Redskins
Last week proved to be a good time to hop back on the Austin bandwagon. All he did was dominate against the Saints, catching seven passes for 139 yards and a TD. This week, he faces a Redskins "D" that held him in check earlier in '09, but with TDs in each of last four games, Austin is playing too well to give up on right now.
Week purchased: Week 15
Eagles TE Brent Celek ($11.95) vs. Broncos
I was happy with Celek's performance last week, as he fought through injuries to his back and thumb to haul in four passes for 73 yards vs. the 49ers. He certainly has a more difficult matchup this Sunday with the Broncos, but he's come through against tough opponents before, so I'm expecting a solid day from the breakout tight end.
Week purchased: Week Nine
Saints PK Garrett Hartley ($6.75) vs. Buccaneers
A last-minute pickup for me last week, Hartley only mustered five points against the Cowboys, but I decided to stick with him for another week. A very accurate kicker for the league's highest-scoring team, Hartley is guaranteed to give owners production each and every week.
Week purchased: Week 15
San Francisco 49ers defense ($6.35) vs. Lions
This week my defensive carousel has landed on the 49ers, who have a tremendous matchup against Detroit. Not only are the Lions among the league's more turnover-prone teams, but they will be trotting out QB Drew Stanton this week to make his first career start. That smells like a recipe for success for the San Fran "D."
