The Texans targeted QB Dan Orlovsky early in free agency and signed him to a three-year, $9.1 million contract — a lucrative deal for a backup. But Orlovsky hasn't provided much return on Houston's investment to date. He has been stuck as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart all season, meaning ex-Bears QB Rex Grossman, not Orlovsky, relieved the injured Matt Schaub in the Week 13 loss at Jacksonville. Orlovsky didn't play well in the preseason. committing four turnovers in his final three appearances and opening the door for Grossman to become the primary backup. Orlovsky, 26, could move up the depth chart next season; he has two years left on his contract, and Grossman, who struggled in relief in Week 13, will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. For now, though, Orlovsky is buried on the inactive list, a disappointing development for player and team.

PFW has launched its brand-new NFL Draft Newsletter series, with the second issue now ready for mailing. Produced by PFW's player personnel department under the direction of Nolan Nawrocki, the series consists of four information-packed issues. Grossman didn't exactly light it up in his one appearance. Orlovsky will likely be the #1 BU next year.
