The Browns have worked the waiver wire all season, but one of their better claims to date may have been picking up OLB Matt Roth after Miami cut him on Nov. 24. Roth, for whom six teams put in a claim, immediately stepped into the starting lineup in Week 12 and notched seven tackles and a sack. Roth, who fell out of favor in Miami, is in the final year of his contract, and if there is no salary cap in 2010, the Browns will be able to retain his rights by tendering him as a restricted free agent. The Browns have had to be flexible at linebacker all season because of injuries. Starting ILBs Eric Barton and D’Qwell Jackson are out for the season, which necessitated David Bowens, formerly a starter outside, moving inside. Jason Trusnik, acquired from the Jets in the Braylon Edwards trade, can also play inside and outside and has proven a valuable pickup. All told, the Browns have adjusted well as injuries have mounted in the LB corps.
