As was first reported by Pro Football Weekly last Sunday, Tim Ruskell’s time has just about run out as general manager of the Seahawks. A press conference has been scheduled for 10 a.m. PST Thursday morning, where it is expected that Ruskell will announce his resignation.
As indicated in two exclusive PFW reports last Sunday, speculation looms large that the door has been opened for the return of former Seahawks and Packers head coach Mike Holmgren — who also served in a dual role as executive vice president in his first four years in Seattle — to return to the Seahawks as the team’s new head of football operations, presumably in a similar role as the one Bill Parcells currently fills in Miami.
According to reports in both the Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune, Ruskell sought a resolution on his future from the Seahawks after PFW’s report surfaced at the beginning of the week, and with no commitment forthcoming, decided to walk away now.
Ruskell was hired by the Seahawks in 2005 from Atlanta, where he worked as assistant GM under Rich McKay. In his first year on the job, he made an immediately strong impression, obtaining five new defensive starters, including LB Lofa Tatupu, who quickly proved to be a second-round steal.
But after losing All-Pro OG Steve Hutchinson to the Vikings for no compensation in 2006, it has been a rough road for Ruskell, with the minuses (trading away a first-rounder for Deion Branch, striking out on RBs T.J. Duckett and Edgerrin James) outweighing the pluses.
