To spread or not to spread: That is the question head coach Mike Singletary has been anguishing over lately, with the cry growing louder in Niners Nation for a switch to a livelier spread/shotgun attack that better suits the skills of QB Alex Smith. Won't happen, Singletary said, also acknowledging the fact that some of his players, most notably TE Vernon Davis, wouldn't mind more of a commitment to a spread offense. "I understand that they're excited," Singletary said. "Particularly Vernon, he's excited any time he gets a play called his way. ... I'm sure that Alex is excited, as well. ... But we also have to look at what's good for Frank (featured back Frank Gore)." The way team insiders see it, Singletary realizes that not every player on the team is in love with the spread concept, especially Gore, who would be forced into a major role adjustment that would result in a lot more blitz pickups and a lot fewer carries.
