After injuring his hip last week at Pittsburgh and sitting out the entire week of practice, it looks like the Bengals will be without workhorse RB Cedric Benson this Sunday at Oakland. Benson is listed as doubtful, making it very unlikely he'll suit up. That means rookie Bernard Scott will make his first career start and could be an intriguing fantasy play against the Raiders' weak run defense. Just know that he won't handle the full workload, sharing carries with Brian Leonard and possible even new acquisition Larry Johnson. Don't expect Johnson to play a huge role, however, as he just joined the team this week.
Injuries also have done a number on the Falcons' backfield. In the midst of a major hot streak, Michael Turner suffered a high ankle sprain last week and could be sidelined for multiple games. He's officially considered doubtful for this week after not practicing at all. With Jerious Norwood (hip, questionable) also banged up and unlikely to be at full strength Sunday, Jason Snelling will be called upon to be Atlanta's featured back against the Giants. He should touch the ball often as both a rusher and pass catcher in this one, making him a nice flex option in most leagues. Also for the Falcons, WR Roddy White (ankle) is listed as questionable but is fully expected to play.
The Broncos have a monster game this week against the division-rival Chargers, and they might have to play it without their starting quarterback. Kyle Orton was not able to practice any day this week after injuring his ankle last Sunday, and he's questionable to face San Diego. If he can't go, Chris Simms would start in his place, which would be a definite downgrade for all of Denver's skill players. Obviously, an injured Orton makes for a poor fantasy play in all leagues regardless of his status, and the production of players like WR Brandon Marshall could suffer if Simms is under center, so use them with caution.
After suffering his second concussion in as many games last week, Eagles RB Brian Westbrook will be on the shelf for the foreseeable future. Head coach Andy Reid said Friday that Westbrook will miss at least the next three games, and it's possible he could sit out longer depending on the speed of his recovery. With Westbrook sidelined, rookie LeSean McCoy will take over as Philly's featured back, giving him serious fantasy value for the rest of 2009. He belongs in fantasy lineups this week at Chicago and just about every week going forward, as well.
Saints RB Reggie Bush had been on a tear as of late, scoring five TDs in his last five games. However, it looks like his run could come to an end this week. A knee injury forced Bush to miss the entire week of practice, and while he's officially listed as questionable, reports are that he's unlikely to play this Sunday in what would have been a favorable matchup at Tampa Bay. That only helps RB Pierre Thomas, who should pick up the slack and makes for a must-start in all formats. Also for New Orleans, WR Lance Moore (ankle) once again has been ruled out.
Other notable players listed as questionable this week are: Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee), Texans WR Jacoby Jones (calf), Ravens TE Todd Heap (chest), Browns WR Josh Cribbs (neck), Vikings WR Bernard Berrian (hamstring), Colts WR Pierre Garcon (ankle) and Browns RB Jamal Lewis (ankle). In addition, Redskins RB Clinton Portis (concussion) has again been declared out.
