The only thing surprising about the Bills' firing of head coach Dick Jauron this week is the timing. While everyone expected him to be gone in 2010, most figured his job was safe for the remainder of the regular season. But from what we hear, a combination of things led to the dismissal of Jauron, which totally shocked the 59-year-old. For one, many of the players had become fed up with the team's direction — or lack thereof — and openly expressed their frustrations after a 41-17 loss at Tennessee. Also, we understand owner Ralph Wilson had grown tired of the constant media scrutiny the 3-6 Bills had been receiving and saw a coaching change as a way to calm down both the media and fan base. Firing Jauron now allows Wilson to get a jumpstart on finding his new head man, which he has already begun doing. Assistant Perry Fewell might be the interim coach, but he's not expected to carry that role into next season.

PFW has launched its brand-new NFL Draft Newsletter series, with the second issue being released later this month. Produced by PFW's player personnel department under the direction of Nolan Nawrocki, the series consists of four information-packed issues. Jauron is probably better suited to be a coordinator. So were Gregg Williams and Wade Phillips. This team has been in decline ever since Bill Polian left. And it's not going to get better any time soon. At least, not until they move to Toronto.
