The Bills announced Wednesday morning that they have signed free-agent TE Joe Klopfenstein. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. To make room for Klopfenstein, a fourth-year veteran, the team placed TE Derek Fine on injured reserve.
Klopfenstein was a second-round draft choice of the Rams in 2006. In three seasons with St. Louis, he played in 48 games with 37 starts, including 16 games played and 10 games started in ’08. He didn't fit into the plans of the Rams' new regime and was among the last cuts before the regular season started. The 6-5, 262-pound Colorado product had been without a team since that time.
Fine was shelved for the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his knee. He had appeared in eight games this season, starting six. He is the 11th Bills player to go on injured reserve this season.
Before signing Klopfenstein, the Bills were down to two healthy tight ends — rookie Shawn Nelson and Jonathan Stupar.
