There are no changes to the top seven in this week's Meter. There could be cases made that Drew Brees, who has 10 turnovers in his last four games, ought to be dropped lower due to his sloppy play, but would the Saints be undefeated without Brees? Could they have pulled off comebacks against the Dolphins and Panthers with a lesser quarterback? The answer is probably not. He still is about as valuable as they come this side of Peyton Manning.
Ben Roethlisberger and the entire Steelers offense had one of its poorer games of the year vs. the Bengals, but the week before they went into Denver and beat a 6-1 Broncos team. Chris Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew have come on strong of late and make their debuts on the Meter this week, but neither has been consistent enough to dethrone any of the players ahead of them on this list.
There were slight hiccups for a couple of the top contenders for the MVP, including the holder of the No. 1 slot, in Week 10. The shape of the race, however, has not changed.
1. Colts QB Peyton Manning — In a near flawless season, Manning put on one of his worst performances of the year in the first 52 minutes or so of the Colts' Sunday-night tilt with the Patriots. Then he went back to his usual self. Bill Belichick bowed at the alter of Manning, and the Colts' quarterback responded by hitting Reggie Wayne on a slant for the game-winning TD, further cementing his claim to the top spot on the Meter.
2. Saints QB Drew Brees — Brees has tapered off. He threw nine TDs in his first two games and has just 10 TD passes in the seven games since. But the Saints are undefeated, and Brees has made it clear he could care less about his numbers. He's still the second-highest-rated quarterback in the league, despite a recent string of so-so performances, and he completed 5-of-5 passes on an early fourth-quarter drive that culminated in a TD toss to Robert Meachem. It turned out to be the game-winning score in New Orleans' win over the Rams Sunday.
3. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson — He fumbled twice on Sunday and both were recovered by the Lions, but Detroit scored only three points off the turnovers. Besides, Peterson's 18 carries for 133 yards and two TDs were more than enough for Minnesota to win 27-10.
4. Vikings QB Brett Favre — It's surprising that the Vikings have been this good with a 40-year-old Favre under center. It's even more surprising that he is taking such good care of the ball. The player formerly known as the reckless gunslinger has just three interceptions to go along with 17 TD passes. He's never thrown fewer than 13 picks in a 16-start season, but he might set a career low in picks this year.
5. Chargers QB Philip Rivers — It was another very solid outing from Rivers vs. the Eagles. He completed 20-of-25 passes for two TDs with no interceptions and even had a little help from his running game for a change.
6. Patriots QB Tom Brady — He threw three TD passes vs. the Colts, which is something no other quarterback had done vs. Indy this year, and had the Patriots one yard away from winning a draining road game. I won't drop him for that.
7. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger — The Bengals' defense outplayed Roethlisberger in Week 10, limiting him to a season-low 174 passing yards, no TDs and one interception. He was sacked four times and was out of sorts all afternoon. Roethlisberger should bounce back quickly, though, against Kansas City's 24th-ranked pass defense in Week 11.
8. Titans RB Chris Johnson — Yes, he plays for a team that started 0-6 and probably isn't headed to the postseason, but don't ignore what he's done this year. The man is averaging 6.4 yards per carry. That's 1.3 yards per carry more than Adrian Peterson, who is pretty good, and Johnson has only 11 fewer carries than Peterson. The Titans, winners of three straight, seem poised to play spoiler, if nothing else, later this season, and Johnson, who hasn't been held to fewer than 128 yards since Week Six, has been sensational.
9. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers — Rodgers bounced back after a poor performance in Tampa, rushing for one TD and passing for another in Green Bay's 17-7 win over Dallas on Sunday. His numbers from that one won't wow anyone, but he made key plays in spite of his shaky offensive line, as he's done almost all season.
10. Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew — He's been on a tear in his last four games, gaining 5.6 yards per carry to go along with seven TDs in the span. Jones-Drew passed up a TD and took a knee instead Sunday, as his coaches told him to, helping to squelch the Jets' chances of getting another offensive possession in Jacksonville's Week 10 win. After all, what's one more when he already leads all running backs in rushing TDs with 12?
Honorable mention: Bengals RB Cedric Benson, Colts WR Reggie Wayne, Vikings DE Jared Allen, Bengals QB Carson Palmer, Saints FS Darren Sharper, Broncos OLB Elvis Dumervil, Cowboys QB Tony Romo, Texans QB Matt Schaub, Steelers OLB James Harrison, Colts DE Dwight Freeney, Patriots WR Randy Moss.
