After signing Shane Lechler to the largest contract for a punter in NFL history earlier this year, the Raiders may shell out a similar deal to hold on to PK Sebastian Janikowski, who will become an unrestricted free agent in March. Janikowski has been the team's most reliable offensive player over the past few seasons, as he's made 19 consecutive field goals dating back to Nov. 16 of last year. The 10th-year veteran should find himself in prime bargaining position in the weeks leading up to the start of free agency. Oakland will most likely use the franchise tag to keep DE Richard Seymour from hitting the open market, since Seymour is said to be interested in playing elsewhere. Al Davis could use a transition tag on Janikowski, who seems content in Oakland, but it would be no surprise if Davis overpays to keep the first-round pick of 2000 on the team.
