The regular season is in full swing, so the Fantasy Doctor will be making house calls regularly, answering readers' fantasy questions Wednesday, Friday and Saturday each week. Send your questions to the Doc at fantasydoctor@pfwmedia.com.
Hey Doc,
I am sure you are getting a lot of Steve Slaton questions this week. I managed to pick up Ryan Moats to give me protection, but now I don't know what to do for this week's lineup. We start two RBs and a flex. I have Chris Johnson and Ray Rice at the RB positions but now need to choose between Slaton, Moats and Jonathan Stewart. Who should get the start this week?
I also have some WR issues. We start four WRs. I have Marques Colston and Greg Jennings taking the two spots. I also have Mike Sims-Walker, Austin Collie, Jeremy Maclin and Laveranues Coles. I think Sims-Walker still needs a start against K.C. despite his poor effort last week. Whom would you give the two other spots to? Thanks.
— Brian
You're right, Brian: You certainly weren't the only one burned by Slaton last week. At least you were able to help yourself out by getting Moats, but is he a viable fantasy play this week?
I don't think so. There's simply no telling how Houston will handle its backfield this week, as coach Gary Kubiak has already stated that Slaton, Moats and Chris Brown will all see time. With that being the case, none makes for an appealing start. Stewart, meanwhile, is coming off a terrific 17-87-2 performance against a tough Arizona run defense. Although he isn't likely to repeat that Sunday at New Orleans, he should at least see enough action to finish with respectable numbers, maybe finding paydirt once.
At WR, I would agree that Sims-Walker is a must-start vs. the Chiefs. Despite his horrible game last week, K.C. is one of the league's worst pass defenses and will be playing short-handed on Sunday because of injuries in the secondary. M.S.W. should go off. It's close between Collie and Maclin for the other spot, but I'd lean toward Collie. He has been a very consistent producer over the last four games, scoring four times and averaging six receptions for 66 yards. He's a sound play against the Texans.
Hi Doctor,
I am barely alive at 3-5 in a PPR league and need your help. We start two RBs, two WRs and a flex (RB/WR). I am extremely weak at RB with Pierre Thomas as my No. 1, but I have Larry Fitzgerald, Roddy White, Calvin Johnson, Derrick Mason and Nate Burleson as my wideouts.
Which two of these WRs would you recommend parting with for a RB? Also, which RB would you target based on the remaining schedule: Ronnie Brown, Chris Johnson, Frank Gore or Joseph Addai? Thanks again.
— BD
Well, BD, you're still hanging in there at 3-5, but hopefully I can give you some advice to help you turn your season around.
Obviously, you'd hate to part with any of your top three WRs, but you'll probably have to in order to get anything of value in return. Since you likely can't get much for Calvin Johnson right now because of his injury, I would try to see what you can get in exchange for White, who has put up nice numbers but is facing a fairly tough schedule ahead, and Mason, who has been on a hot streak but also has a slew of difficult opponents left.
As for which RB to target, I don't think you can go wrong with Brown, Johnson or Gore, but I like Johnson the most of those three. He can single-handedly win you some matchups with his explosiveness, and he has quite a few cupcakes on the upcoming slate. If you can't get him, though, Brown also has a fairly easy road ahead, so try getting him. Good luck.
