Just when it looked as if veteran OTs Chad Clifton and newly re-signed Mark Tauscher were ready to settle into starting roles again, the versatile Jason Spitz, who had been saddled by a lower-back injury that just kept on getting worse, was placed on injured reserve. Spitz told one insider that he was good to go against the Browns in Week Seven, only to suddenly come up lame. The Packers could do a lot worse than having to count on scrappy Scott Wells, who has played as well as any Packers offensive lineman, to hold down the fort at center in Spitz’s place. Still, the consensus is that a healthy Spitz would have been a better alternative than either Wells at center or Daryn Colledge, who has had a rough season, at left guard. As for the ORT position, the prevailing feeling is that Tauscher is a better fit than Allen Barbre, who broke down too often as a starter.
