The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "Josh McDaniels made a lot of brash decisions (upon his arrival in Denver) and everyone was critical of him, me included, but he knows what he is doing. He's got his players prepared. He's done a good job of managing Kyle Orton within that system, just like he did with (Tom) Brady and (Matt) Cassel. He manages them extremely well, teaches what to look for and where to take shots. That's what (Bill) Belichick does. He outcoaches (opponents). When you look at Orton, you've got to remember — there is a lot of talent around him. He has a very good offensive line. He has a solid center, two very good tackles, a very good RB situation and some outstanding receivers. You can plug a lot of quarterbacks into that system with the weapons they have and the time (the quarterback) has to throw, and they would be successful."

• "(49ers WR) Michael Crabtree looked like the real deal in his first game. No one can say he is not a good player. After playing one game, he already had more production than (Raiders WR) Darrius Heyward-Bey has all season. It was an impressive showing. He is a talented player."

• "I was not a Vince Young fan when he was coming out of college, and I have seen nothing that makes me think he could play quarterback in the league since he entered. He won (in 2006) because they played great defense. His problem is — once you take his feet away and force him to be a pocket passer, he is done. Once defenses settled down and learned to keep him in the pocket, not rushing hard upfield and staying in front of him, all of a sudden he could not function."

• "(49ers QB) Alex Smith played about as good as a quarterback could play in the second half (against Houston). He stared down the gun barrel a couple of times, delivered the ball and took a shot. The big question is how he can perform now that he is the starter again and the pressure is back on him."

• "I think (first-year Buccaneers head coach) Raheem Morris is a complete and utter joke as a head coach in the National Football Leaague, but that is not his roster. It is the roster put together by (Jon) Gruden and (Bruce) Allen."

• "Any team would be struggling on defense without (Chargers NT) Jamal Williams. He's a guy you cannot replace."

• "If you watch the Eagles' defense, you cannot even tell the difference (between what they are doing now and what they did under Jim Johnson). As a matter of fact, I would say it is even better now. (Sean McDermott) is doing an excellent job."

• "San Francisco has a bunch of defensive tackles rushing the passer. They don't get enough pressure. Manny Lawson is not doing anything. He is really disappointing."

• "Peyton Manning is fun to watch. He is unbelievable. (The Colts') roster is not overly talented. Even their receivers are a bunch of young guys. But when you have a quarterback like that, it hides all your warts."

• "Life is miserable for everyone in the Browns' organization. It's in complete disarray. There is not enough communication. It's a very dysfunctional setup. I don't know how it can survive another year."

• "(Bills DT) Kyle Williams (who missed the first start of his career Sunday with a knee injury) is not going to pile up sacks, but he is a good run-down player. He will never win a beauty pageant — he looks like a square block of meringue and should be driving a pickup truck, but he leaves everything he's got on the field."

PFW has launched its brand-new NFL Draft Newsletter series, with the second issue being released later this month. Produced by PFW's player personnel department under the direction of Nolan Nawrocki, the series consists of four information-packed issues.
