WR Chris Chambers' time had run its course in San Diego. Not only was he in the midst of the worst year of his career, catching just nine passes for 122 yards and a TD through seven games, but he also reportedly was involved in a relationship with a woman that had become a distraction to him and the team. The way we hear it, though, it was his poor on-field performance that ultimately got him released this week. Lacking explosion and separation ability at age 31, Chambers was no longer an asset to the offense. We're told that cutting him was made easier by the Bolts' confidence in replacement Malcom Floyd, a huge target at 6-foot-5 who has proven he can make big plays by outjumping defenders downfield. Floyd's presence as a starter will allow Vincent Jackson to line up in different spots on the field and run a larger variety of routes, making him a more complete receiver and an even more dangerous weapon for QB Philip Rivers.
