The Redskins placed OLT Chris Samuels on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season.
The six-time Pro Bowler had suffered a neck injury in an Oct. 11 game against Carolina. Because he has played with spinal stenosis — a narrowing of the spine — since high school, the neck injury jeopardizes his playing career.
"I will continue to seek medical advice," Samuels said in a statement. "I hope to see where I am physically over the next couple months. At this time, I have not made a decision, but I love playing for the Redskins and hope to be back."
The third overall draft selection in 2000, Samuels, 32, has missed only eight games in his 10-year NFL career, including the final four games of 2008, when he had a torn triceps muscle. He has started all 141 games in which he has appeared.
Samuels' replacement will be either Stephon Heyer, who started the past two games at left tackle after moving from right tackle, or veteran Levi Jones, a former Bengal and seven-year veteran whom the Redskins signed Oct. 20.
