Welcome to Week Eight of the 2009 NFL season. Each week I'll be revealing my Stock Exchange starting lineup to you, analyzing the players I've purchased, how much I paid for them and their matchup for that week. I'll also be including the starting lineups of five other PFW editors to give you a good idea of which players we like in that week's slate of games. Hopefully this analysis will help you make the best possible lineup and get you on your way to winning the $2,500 grand prize. Good luck!
Team Blunda
Saints QB Drew Brees ($44.01) vs. Falcons
Brees was not on his "A" game last week, but he still managed to finish with his typical huge production. Despite throwing just one TD pass and three INTs at Miami, he salvaged the day by taking two QB sneaks in for scores. Things shouldn't be as difficult this Monday night against the Falcons, whose shaky secondary is giving up 250.7 passing yards per game. Brees should shine in this one.
Week purchased: Week Six
Cowboys QB Tony Romo ($21.08) vs. Seahawks
With Romo really picking up his play as of late, I liked his chances for more success this week in a favorable matchup. In his last two games, the Dallas signalcaller has thrown for 662 yards and five TDs, thanks mainly to the emergence of WR Miles Austin. I don't se him slowing down vs. a Seattle defense that has been nothing special this season.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Texans RB Steve Slaton ($23.16) at Bills
Even though Slaton's rushing numbers are down, he has made up for it with his contributions in the passing game. Despite not rushing for more than 76 yards in a game, the dual threat is still averaging 92 yards from scrimmage and has scored five times. Running room should be easier to find this week against a Buffalo run "D" that ranks dead last, allowing 172.4 yards per game.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Lions RB Kevin Smith ($14.18) vs. Rams
Although Smith has been heavily involved in Detroit's offense all season, yards have been tough for him to come by, as he's gaining just 3.2 yards per carry. However, a matchup with the Rams should help cure his problems. St. Louis is giving up 135.9 rushing yards per game and has surrendered 11 rushing scores, so Smith is a solid bet for big production.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Saints WR Marques Colston ($32.87) vs. Falcons
After owning Randy Moss all season, I finally had to sell him because he's on bye. Colston isn't a bad replacement, though. He has picked his play back up over the past two weeks, catching 13 passes for 238 yards and two TDs. The favorite target of prolific QB Drew Brees, Colston should have a field day against an Atlanta secondary ripe for the picking.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker ($17.03) at Titans
Few receivers have risen as quickly this season as Sims-Walker, who is averaging seven receptions for nearly 100 yards in the four games in which he has played. This Sunday he takes on Tennessee's league-worst pass defense, which he already lit up for 7-91-2 back in Week Four. Take advantage of his reasonable price and get him in your lineup for this week and beyond.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Cowboys WR Miles Austin ($12.62) vs. Seahawks
Apparently, this guy's no fluke. Austin paid off big time for me last week, tearing apart Atlanta for six catches, 171 yards and two TDs. That now makes 16 grabs for 421 yards and four scores in his last two outings. As Austin continues to establish himself as a big-play threat, QB Tony Romo will only continue to feed him more and more, giving the wideout ridiculous potential. There's not a hotter fantasy player in the game right now.
Week purchased: Week Seven
Texans TE Owen Daniels ($10.72) at Bills
Another week, another standout performance by Daniels, who is making a strong case to finish the season as the No. 1 fantasy tight end. With seven receptions for 123 yards and a TD last Sunday, he now has 22-295-3 in his last three games. At this point, his opponent doesn't even matter; QB Matt Schaub loves throwing to Daniels, making him a must-start every week.
Week purchased: Week Six
Broncos PK Matt Prater ($5.80) at Ravens
I decided to go with a placekicker again after not bothering with one last week, and Prater seemed like a decent option. He's not the league's most accurate leg, but he already has connected on 12 field goals and should get a few opportunities this week, as the Broncos' offense could stall in the red zone at Baltimore.
Week purchased: Week Eight
Arizona Cardinals defense ($6.57) vs. Panthers
Arizona's defense has been surprisingly effective this season, racking up 16 sacks and seven interceptions thus far. But the reason I snagged this unit was for its matchup this week against QB Jake Delhomme. Delhomme has already thrown an absurd 13 picks, and I fully expect the Cards to force at least a couple more this Sunday.
