As if the Chiefs' season wasn't going poorly enough, with just one win through seven contests, the anti-gay remarks made by RB Larry Johnson this week have only further derailed things. With Johnson suspended for two weeks — and an outright release still possible — Kansas City will have to make fairly significant alterations to its offensive game plan going forward. Head coach/coordinator Todd Haley said he will use the Week Eight bye to re-tailor the offense with its existing tools, and we hear that means finding the best ways to utilize Johnson's replacement, Jamaal Charles. Not the powerful, straight-ahead runner L.J. is, the diminutive Charles is best with the ball in space, so Haley likely will implement more outside runs into the playbook. The second-year player is also a skilled pass catcher, making screens a natural way to incorporate him. While Charles is expected to be their featured back, he's not built to take a pounding, so the Chiefs are banking on Kolby Smith (knee) returning soon to handle short-yardage duties.
