Vinny Cerrato isn't about to take the blame for the Redskins' dismal 2-5 record this year. When asked by reporters Tuesday whether he had given head coach Jim Zorn a roster that was capable of making the playoffs, the team's executive vice president of football operations answered affirmatively.
A number of Redskins players have complained about the team's lack of depth, particularly along the offensive line, with RB Clinton Portis saying Monday, "We went into the season, and we didn't address that issue, and it came back to haunt us."
At the start of the season, the team didn't have a single backup offensive lineman who had played a down in 2008 regular season, even though OT Chris Samuels and OG Randy Thomas were coming back from multiple surgeries. Cerrato said he "tried to address the line," citing the additions of OG Derrick Dockery and OT Mike Williams.
Samuels and Thomas are injured now, and the O-line has allowed 14 sacks in the past three games.
Last week Cerrato removed the play-calling duties from Zorn and handed them to the recently hired Sherman Lewis, who had been retired.
