The more our Rams sources ponder the team's trade that sent veteran LB Will Witherspoon to the Eagles in exchange for rookie WR Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round pick next year, the more they like it. "The team needs all the help it can get at wide receiver with Donnie Avery's hip bothering him again," said one team insider. "They really like Gibson. He says they called him on Draft Day, and he might have been a fall-back had they not been able to get (fifth-rounder) Brooks Foster, who they felt had better speed. The Eagles' terminology is identical to the Rams' so that certainly has to help." As for Witherspoon, the prevailing feeling was that his play had really leveled off after his one good season with the Rams in 2007, when they had him coming off the edge more in three-man fronts. "He had zero sacks, takeaways or pass breakups this season, and his cap number for next year was $6.8 million," the insider said. "Paris Lenon is not a bad replacement — at least for the short term."
