Welcome to Week Seven of the 2009 NFL season. Each week I'll be revealing my Stock Exchange starting lineup to you, analyzing the players I've purchased, how much I paid for them and their matchup for that week. I'll also be including the starting lineups of other PFW editors to give you a good idea of which players we like in that week's slate of games. Hopefully this analysis will help you make the best possible lineup and get you on your way to winning the $2,500 grand prize. Good luck!
Team Blunda
Saints QB Drew Brees ($44.01) at Dolphins
Well, I'd say gambling on Brees last week vs. the Giants' top-ranked pass defense worked out pretty nicely. All he did was throw for 369 yards and four TDs in a blowout victory. There's no reason why he shouldn't keep rolling this week vs. a Miami "D" that's much better against the run than the pass. Given his ridiculous potential in this format, I don't see myself parting ways with Brees anytime soon, if ever.
Week purchased: Week Six
Patriots QB Tom Brady ($34.60) at Buccaneers (in London)
Now, that's more like it. It took Brady until Week Six to truly explode, but boy, did he ever do so against the Titans. Playing in only about two and a half quarters, Brady racked up an amazing 380 yards and six TDs in snowy New England conditions. While a repeat of that performance isn't likely, Brady is a solid bet to head over to London and rip up the Bucs' putrid defense, which has given up 13 passing scores.
Week purchased: Week Four
Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams ($18.27) vs. Bills
Williams took advantage of a great matchup last week and had the outing everyone had been waiting for, blowing by Tampa Bay for 152 yards and two TDs on 30 attempts. Looking like he's back on track, the fantasy stud couldn't ask for an easier opponent than the Bills, whom he faces Sunday. Buffalo's run defense ranks dead last, allowing 181.8 rushing yards per game. Williams should be licking his chops.
Week purchased: Week Six
49ers RB Frank Gore ($19.26) at Texans
After sitting out two games with an ankle injury, Gore returns this week to face the Texans, fresh and ready to roll. Prior to going down in Week Three, Gore was off to a big start to '09, running for 237 yards and scoring four TDs in the first two games. While Houston's run "D" has been better lately, it still has surrendered a league-high 10 rushing scores on the season. In line to see a heavy workload, Gore should produce.
Week purchased: Week Seven
Patriots WR Randy Moss ($36.50) at Buccaneers (in London)
Being patient with Moss finally paid off. After starting the season slowly, he burned the horrible Tennessee pass defense for eight catches for 129 yards and three TDs in the snow last Sunday, showing that he and Tom Brady are still capable of carrying fantasy squads. Against a Bucs defense that's giving up a NFL-high 7.5 yards per pass play, Moss is a rock-solid play this week in London.
Week purchased: Week One
Texans WR Andre Johnson ($29.86) vs. 49ers
Although he didn't get into the endzone last week, Johnson was a yardage machine, grabbing eight passes for 135 yards at Cincinnati. With QB Matt Schaub playing at a Pro Bowl level, Johnson is a prime candidate to have outings like this on a weekly basis, regardless of the opponent. The Niners have been vulnerable through the air thus far, so the Schaub-Johnson connection should be hitting on all cylinders.
Week purchased: Week Six
Cowboys WR Miles Austin ($12.62) vs. Falcons
It's hard not to like Austin's situation this week. Putting up an absurd 10-250-2 prior to last week's bye, he's now a full-fledged member of Dallas' starting lineup, so playing time won't be an issue. Plus, with a ton of speed and already a nice rapport with Tony Romo, he only figures to improve, a scary proposition considering what he did the last time out. The Cowboys have been looking for a big-play threat, and Austin should wind up being that guy.
Week purchased: Week Seven
Texans TE Owen Daniels ($10.72) vs. 49ers
Daniels was sensational last week, making difficult grabs on his way to a seven-catch, 78-yard, two-TD day at Cincy. Daniels is another guy benefiting from the emergence of Matt Schaub, as he has become an extremely effective red-zone target. With few tight ends playing better right now, Daniels is a great fantasy start each and every week, as the Texans are going to throw the ball coming off the bus.
Week purchased: Week Six
No PK
With transaction fees rising and very little money left to spend, I decided to go without a placekicker this week. It's a position that was getting me next to nothing anyway, so I don't think it's going to make a serious difference. In fact, it might actually turn out to be a good strategy, as it allows me to spend more money on other positions.
Week purchased: None
New England Patriots defense ($9.41) at Buccaneers (in London)
As scoring defenses go, the Pats have been one of the league's best, giving up just 15.2 points per game. They also rank near the top in takeaways with 12. That bodes well for when they take on Tampa Bay this week, as the Bucs' offense has had trouble moving the ball or scoring all season. This is a clear mismatch on paper.
