Steve Smith's declaration that he's "no longer an asset" to the Panthers after being held to one catch for four yards in a Week Six win was the result of frustration with the team's struggling passing game and implicitly indicted QB Jake Delhomme, who has thrown a league-high 13 interceptions — including three last week. Observers in Carolina say the QB situation will continue to be an issue as long as Delhomme's up-and-mostly-down play continues. He is signed through 2014, but the Panthers are expected to explore other options, most likely in free agency, this offseason. One player who could fit into the Panthers' plans, sources say, is Jason Campbell, who is expected to depart Washington after his contract expires in the offseason. He could be a cheap alternative to Delhomme and has much more upside, although he has not shown signs of improving with his performance this season.
