He might not be the defensive rookie the Bills expected to make an instant impact, but FS Jairus Byrd has done just that. Forced into the starting lineup because of injuries to Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott, Byrd has come through in a big way, intercepting two passes in both Weeks Six and Seven to give him five picks in the past three games. While Byrd's play certainly has been a pleasant surprise, it could soon cause a dilemma for head coach Dick Jauron. When Whitner (thumb and ankle injuries) and Scott (high ankle sprain) are both healthy, which player goes to the bench? From what we hear, it very well could be Scott, as Buffalo opts for youth in leaving Byrd at free safety and shifting Whitner to the strong spot. Possessing top-notch ball instincts, Byrd has proven too valuable to sit, even if he admits his run-stopping skills could use some work.
