Oklahoma junior QB Sam Bradford called off a press conference scheduled for Wednesday night so he could further deliberate about his future. He was expected to announce that he would have season-ending surgery on his right throwing shoulder after initially being diagnosed with a Grade 3 sprain of his AC joint, but X-rays and MRIs have not shown any new damage and Bradford still appears to be weighing his options. A great competitor, it seems he is torn by serving his best individual interests and having the surgery performed now.
Call it a coincidence given that Bradford was knocked out of games this year by pressure coming from the edges, but they both resulted when Brody Eldridge was in the starting lineup on the line. The senior opened the season at center against BYU before moving to tight end to help replace the injured Jermaine Gresham. Against Texas, he was moved back to the OLG position. His tenacity as a blocker and overall versatility will increase his value in the NFL draft, but questions still abound about what his best pro position will be, and the Sooners' line has appeared more shaky and inconsistent overall when he has been thrown into the mix at the 11th hour, as he has both times.
Texas defensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp did an excellent job of bringing an array of pressure that kept OU's line confused and guessing all day. Senior DT Lamarr Houston consistently worked his way into the backfield as did Sergio Kindle, who finished with four tackles for loss and a half-sack. He would likely have notched another in the fourth quarter had he not been tackled after coming free.
With the O-line struggling to protect Bradford, combined with his inability to avoid landing squarely on his shoulder, he only runs the risk of greater injury if he returns.
• Penn State senior LB Sean Lee returned to play against Minnesota last week after missing three games with a sprained knee and re-injured the knee again, but he has been practicing in preparation for the Michigan contest this week and is expected to play Saturday. He possesses great instincts and feel for the game, but after missing all of last season with a torn ACL, durability questions could affect his draft status. Scouts passing through the program have stamped second-round grades on the senior.
• Arizona State senior WR Chris McGaha will have to make his living as a move-the-chains possession receiver in the NFL, but he came up big with the game-winning 50-yard TD catch with five seconds remaining on the clock to beat Washington. McGaha was limited with the flu all week and did not practice at all. Despite not making a single other catch in the game and being wide open down the seam as a result of a blown coverage, he produced in the clutch once again, as he has done throughout his career. He has warranted some mid-round grades from NFL evaluators.
• West Virginia senior QB Jarrett Brown is expected to play against Connecticut this week despite leaving the Marshall game last week with a mild concussion in the first quarter after being sandwiched by two defenders. He has no recollection of the hit and it was the first time he has been knocked unconscious. After sitting out two days, he returned to the practice field. Florida's Tim Tebow has played more cautiously since suffering a more severe concussion requiring hospitalization and evaluators will be monitoring how Brown performs when he returns.
• Clemson senior RB C.J. Spiller popped off a 66-yard TD run against Wake Forest — the fifth scoring play of 63 yards or better this season for Spiller. Despite nursing minor injuries much of the season, has been a big-play machine this year for the Tigers, ripping off 50-plus-yard plays in every game this season in at least one phase of the game. Every time he touches the ball, he stands a chance to go the distance. He has solidified a spot in the first round and stands a very good chance of being the first back drafted.
• Utah senior OLT Zane Beadles has disappointed scouts with his inconsistency this season and is being projected inside to guard. He plays too soft and has struggled with counter moves.
• Sooners OLT Trent Williams left the Texas game briefly with a slightly sprained left ankle injury that forced him to be helped off the field, but he returned to the game. He has not looked as comfortable playing on the left side this season on an offensive line that has lacked continuity, but his talent is undeniable and he still projects as an early pick.
