Reports have surfaced that Patriots WR Julian Edelman has a broken arm and is out for an indefinite period.

The injury would be a blow to a team that is coming off its best offensive performance in two seasons. Edelman had emerged as the team's No. 3 receiver, supplanting Joey Galloway, who was released Tuesday.

Head coach Bill Belichick rarely speaks about his players' injuries but did talk about being "banged up" on offense. Edelman also contributes as a returner.

Sam Aiken, who recently received a contract extension and is a prime special teamer, could see an increased role at wideout. So could rookie Brandon Tate, who remains on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list but has begun to practice with the team.
