The Chargers on Tuesday signed free-agent CB Dante Hughes and placed LB Antwan Applewhite on injured reserve.

A third-round pick of the Colts in 2007, Hughes spent the past two seasons as a reserve in Indianapolis, appearing in 24 games and recording 34 tackles and one interception. He was released following this season's training camp.

Hughes gives San Diego depth at a position where it had little. The team had been carrying only three true corners in Quentin Jammer, Antonio Cromartie and Antoine Cason.

Applewhite will miss the rest of the season after recently re-aggravating a hamstring injury he suffered in Week One. He is slated to undergo surgery.
