Niners head coach Mike Singletary said in his Monday press briefing that the team had decided to place 10-year veteran LB and special-teams heavyweight Jeff Ulbrich on injured reserve. Ulbrich had been sidelined since suffering a concussion in Week Four against the Rams. Singletary said the team was replacing Ulbrich on the roster with ex-Chargers LB Matt Wilhelm, a player Niners defensive coordinator Greg Manusky coached in San Diego.
As for starting SS Michael Lewis, who also has been dealing with concussion issues, Singletary said he was still in the process of undergoing neurological tests, but that it was likely he would remain on the roster, although there were no guarantees.
“The reason we put Jeff Ulbrich on I.R. is we really have a conservative approach to everything we do as it pertains to our players,” Singletary said. “We want to make sure that, even though we come out here and stress the physicality of what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to bring across, at the same time, on the other side of that, we want to make sure that we take care of our players because taking care of the players means we’re taking care of their families as well in the long run.”
