The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "The Jets did not have anyone at quarterback — they were going into camp with Kellen Clemens — until one man bailed them out. They did not have a No. 1 receiver until one man bailed them out. I don't care if Eric Mangini is organized — what has he ever done to deserve the power? Talk about taking advantage of your friend. Give (Mike) Tannenbaum a ton of credit. He (stuck it to) the Browns twice. It's unbelievable to me. Maybe Mangini is paying him back for sticking them with Vernon Gholston. Braylon Edwards had some problems, but it's not easy to find No. 1 receivers in this league. They don't grow them on trees. Edwards needs a players' coach that can challenge him and still have fun with it. If there is an environment where he could be successful, it is for a head coach like Rex Ryan."

• "It takes three games to evaluate a quarterback — I've always said that. It takes three games to figure one out and then you have to evaluate them, after the defensive coordinators in this league figure out what they can and can't do. (Jets QB) Mark Sanchez had his three games of glory, and then he looked befuddled against the Saints. Some of them come out the other side and get through it, and some of them don't. We'll see how this kid responds. Trading for a receiver tells me how worried (Mike) Tannenbaum is."

• "Mike Tomlin knows how to push buttons that Ron Zook never found. (RB Rashard) Mendenhall was off a step here and there and lacked some focus. Tomlin did not like it, so he sat the kid for a week and buried it. If you watched (Mendenhall) in the preseason, he looked good — he just needed a chance to get more carries. I think Tomlin will get the best out of him."

• "The Chiefs tried to run the 'Wildcat' with Larry Johnson to no avail — he is not quick enough. Ronnie Brown has a lot more quickness."

• "(Browns QB) Brady Quinn pats the ball too much. He is not a quick decision maker. When he was at Notre Dame, I thought his placement was poor. He always forced his receivers to adjust and too often threw to the backside shoulder. The NFL game is faster and receivers are faster — it's going to create a lot of incompletions. You got to be able to put it in front (of receivers) where they can catch it. It's the same with Trent Edwards and Jason Campbell. They hold on to that ball too long and pat it. You got to get rid of it."

• "Vernon Davis is finally coming around as a receiver, but he is not blocking the same way he has in the past."

• "Seattle's offensive line is beat (up). (OLT) Walter (Jones) is probably done this year, and definitely done for next year. (OT Sean) Locklear has been hurt. (C Chris) Spencer has been hurt. The guy that is playing pretty well for them is the rookie (ORG Max Unger)."

• "(Saints defensive coordinator) Gregg Williams is a good football coach. He's got a real brash demeanor and is a big-ego guy, but he's a damn good football coach. With the economy being the way it is and first-time coaches having some success, I don't know that every owner is going to be willing to give $4, 5, 6 million (salaries) anymore. Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder may not care, but I don't know that all the big names out there (Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher) are going to have opportunities."

• "How about (Broncos head coach) Josh McDaniels getting Kyle Orton to play? He was 4-0 with no interceptions (in the first quarter of the season). I will tell you what: Mike Nolan has done a great job of getting that defense to play. That is a ragtag bunch of guys — Ryan McBean, Kenny Peterson, Mario Haggan, Elvis Dumervil — it's not a very talented group. Their best move was signing (FS Brian) Dawkins. He forces everyone out there to play as hard as they can."

I 100% agree. I'm a bit surprised that Kenny Peterson is still a starter in the nfl. He was drafted by GB/Mike Sherman in 04, I think & he only played for GB for about 2yrs & he eas traded/waived. I'm not saying he's bad, just a little surprised. Good for him, he was a potential #1 round draft choice. Glad he's still around.
