Should I trade Steve Slaton, Reggie Wayne and Eddie Royal for Anquan Boldin, Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw?
— Steve
Man, that would be a pretty significant trade, Steve. It's rare that deals like this actually get pulled off in fantasy football. However, I think you should probably do it.
While it would be difficult to part ways with a player as solid as Wayne, are you really losing a whole lot besides him? Royal has been largely a disappointment thus far, and Slaton doesn't look anything like the fantasy stud he was in 2008. Sure, there's still time for each to get things turned around, but if they don't get going soon, they're just going to continue bringing your team down.
Getting Boldin will help replace Wayne's production, as the Arizona wideout has been consistent early on and should begin to find the endzone more. And acquiring both Giants RBs ensures that you have two backs you can start on a weekly basis. Jacobs is too good to stay in a slump all season, and Bradshaw has been playing out of his mind thus far. Considering how often New York will run the ball, I really like this tandem.
If you need backfield help, I say to pull the trigger here, as you'd also be getting a terrific receiver in return.
Doc,
Would you play Willie Parker over Reggie Bush this week?
And at the flex position, because most of my RBs are on bye this week, would you play Wes Welker, Donald Driver or Steve Smith (Giants)? Thanks.
— Chris
To answer your first question, Chris, I would not start Parker in fantasy leagues this week. Although he is expected to play after missing the previous two games with turf toe, he admittedly is not at 100 percent and will be wearing a special shoe on Sunday. While he does have a very favorable matchup against the Browns, I don't trust him to get many carries, especially with how well Rashard Mendenhall is playing. Even though Bush has been largely unproductive this season, he will be fairly involved in the offense and offers much more upside.
As for your flex spot, that's a tougher call. Although Welker and Driver have the better matchups this week, I'm sticking with Smith, who I believe belongs in starting lineups until he proves otherwise. I know his numbers weren't great last week, but that was in a game that was a blowout early and saw QB Eli Manning sit out the second half. Smith is still putting up huge stats for the season, and in a game against the Saints this Sunday that could be high scoring, I expect him to be stellar.
Hey Fantasy Doc,
Quick question: I'm in a 14-team league and have been offered Greg Jennings for Felix Jones. Our starting lineups include two WRs, two RBs and one flex. My WRs are Joshua Cribbs (leads the league in return yards, nice source of consistent points), Kevin Walter and Anthony Gonzalez. My RBs are Steve Slaton, Knowshon Moreno, Kevin Smith, Jones and Cadillac Williams. With it being such a deep league, I've been really working the trades in order to shore up some positions, but I could really use some help here. Thanks!
— Martin, Seattle, Wash.
Looking at the players on your roster, Martin, this trade is a no-brainer in my opinion. Even when Gonzalez returns from injury, you still are going to be very thin at receiver, and you definitely don't have a true No. 1. While Jennings has faltered a bit early on, he is exactly the type of wideout you need. There's a reason people were so high on him entering '09 — it's because he was such a stud last season, catching 80 passes for 1,292 yards and nine TDs. Now that the Packers' O-line is healthy again, QB Aaron Rodgers should have the time to hook up with Jennings downfield.
As for Jones, while I certainly love his vast potential, the fact that he seems to be hurt more often than not is a concern. Dealing with a knee injury right now, how many games will he be 100 percent for the rest of the way? Plus, you have plenty of backfield depth, so losing him really won't affect your team much. Making this move should instantly improve your roster, so go for it.
