We hear the Panthers finally might be ready to expand WR Dwayne Jarrett's role. There was speculation in the offseason that Jarrett, who had just 16 catches in his first two seasons, was ready to take on more responsibility after a disappointing start to his career, but he has been sparsely used thus far and only has two catches through four games. Word is teammates have been very impressed with Jarrett's performance in practice and the team is more open to using him than ever before now that it's becoming clear that No. 2 WR Muhsin Muhammad isn't capable of stretching the field and drawing the defense's attention away from the team's top playmaker, WR Steve Smith. Smith's yards per catch average has dropped significantly this season. Muhammad, 36, is a much better blocker than Jarrett, but the Panthers appear to be willing to sacrifice the downfield blocks if Jarrett proves to be a better complement to Smith in the passing game.
