Our NFL sources told us this summer that Miles Austin really had a chip on his shoulder, not about earning a starting spot with the team but about becoming the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver. That title ostensibly had belonged to Roy Williams, for whom the Cowboys paid a fortune both in draft picks and salary. And though Austin had by most accounts a great summer, he was slowed with a hamstring injury through most of training camp and got off to a slow start this season. Following Austin's club-record 250-yard game against the Chiefs, head coach Wade Phillips said he remained supportive of Williams and Patrick Crayton as his starting wideouts, but that Austin should get around 50 snaps per game after the bye. Austin ranks as one of the few players on the team who can get yards after the catch, and his improved polish as a receiver has been evident.
