Colts PK Adam Vinatieri has undergone knee surgery and will be out up to six weeks. To replace him, Indianapolis agreed to terms with veteran PK Matt Stover, who worked out for the club Tuesday.
Stover, 41, ranks third in career field goals made (462) through 19 seasons that saw him break into the league with the Browns and follow the franchise when it moved to Baltimore. He had been the Ravens' only placekicker until this past offseason, when they decided they no longer wanted to devote an additional roster spot to a kickoff specialist to complement Stover, who they felt could no longer provide the necessary distance on kickoffs. As a result, the Ravens opted to keep the strong-legged Steven Hauschka to handle field goals and kickoffs.
Rookie P Pat McAfee handles kickoffs for the Colts so Stover won't have to handle those duties.
Vinatieri, a 14th-year veteran, has made 6-of-8 FG attempts and 17-of-17 PATs this season.
