The regular season has begun, so the Fantasy Doctor will be making house calls regularly, answering readers' fantasy questions Wednesday through Saturday each week. Send your questions to the Doc at fantasydoctor@pfwmedia.com.
Dear Doc,
I've received the following trade offer in a PPR league that starts two QBs:
I give up Pierre Thomas and Jason Campbell.
I get Donovan McNabb and Clinton Portis.
I'm leaning toward it because I'm weak at QB (I have David Garrard and Kurt Warner as starters, with Campbell as my only bench QB, plus two bye weeks coming up) and strong at RB (DeAngelo Williams, Matt Forté, Fred Jackson, Thomas and Rashard Mendenhall). I doubt I'd ever start Portis, so is Thomas for McNabb straight up a better deal? Thank you, and I'll light a candle …
— Laura, Epping, N.H.
Well, Laura, while at first glance I wasn't so sure about this deal, the more I think about it, the more I think you should pull the trigger.
Considering that you have to start Garrard, who has been very up and down thus far, on a weekly basis, the upgrade to McNabb would be immense. Now that he's back healthy, McNabb should be a solid fantasy starter for the remainder of the season in Philly's high-octane offense. Pairing him with Warner would provide you a solid one-two punch at QB.
And while I'm not all that high on Portis, who definitely looks to have lost some of his explosion this season, he should at least be a serviceable reserve for you. Like you said, you'll rarely need him in your starting lineup, anyway. Getting him should help offset the loss of Thomas, whom I like but is no guarantee to continue being the Saints' featured back now that Mike Bell is healthy again.
I recommended doing the two-for-two trade as opposed to Thomas for McNabb, as Portis is definitely a more valuable asset than Campbell.
Hello, Good Doctor,
I could sure use your input this week, as I'm two games back of first place and play the leader this week. We start a combination of six RBs and WRs, with a minimum of two each, non-PPR. Please pick six: Brandon Jacobs, Ray Rice, Pierre Thomas, Brandon Marshall, Roddy White, Donald Driver, Kevin Walter, Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin. Also, which QB should I start: Drew Brees or Ben Roethlisberger? It's normally a no-brainer, but with the matchups and recent play of both, I'm not so sure. I would love to move up a notch in the standings, so your help is desperately needed. Thanks.
— Nikki from Texas
Lots of players to consider here, Nikki, so I'll jump right in.
First off, I think all three of your RBs belong in the lineup this week. Even though Jacobs has been struggling a bit, I still like him in a game that could be a high-scoring affair. Rice is going against the tough Vikings, but he has been performing incredibly well as both a runner and pass catcher lately, so I don't think you can bench him. And Thomas has looked great in the two games since returning to health, so I think you have to continue playing him until he proves otherwise.
Among your WRs, Marshall, White and Driver stick out to me. Marshall is clearly back on the right track after a sluggish start and has a favorable matchup against the Chargers. White broke out with a monster effort last week (8-210-2) and should be considered a weekly start going forward. And although Driver has been up and down, he has a great matchup this week against the Lions and should put forth one of his better efforts.
At QB, as tempting as it might be to play the hot hand in Big Ben, you have to stick with Brees. His past two games haven't been great, but there was a reason he was the No. 1 fantasy QB entering 2009. His potential is better than anyone's at the position, and it's very likely he busts out of his slump this week, even against a tough opponent like the Giants. As long as he's healthy, he should be your starter.
