The 49ers announced late Monday afternoon that they have released CB-KR Allen Rossum, who had been deactivated the past two games. The team also lifted WR Michael Crabtree’s roster exemption, enabling the first-round draft pick to fill the roster spot left vacant by Rossum’s release. Additionally, the Niners released OG Drew Radovich from their practice squad.

Rossum, a 12-year pro out of Notre Dame, had looked tentative returning kicks earlier this season and appeared to have lost a step. He currently ranks second in NFL history for total career return yards (14,987) and career kickoff return yards (11,931). Prior to joining the 49ers in 2008, he spent time with the Eagles (1998-99), Packers (2000-01), Falcons (2002-06) and Steelers (2007). Crabtree is expected to see spot duty as a slot receiver in his first regular-season game as a Niner on Oct. 25 against Houston.
