Deciding they needed his help immediately, the Buccaneers activated FS Tanard Jackson from the exempt/commissioner permission list on Saturday. Jackson had finished serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
Tampa had the option to keep Jackson on the exempt list for one game, but they activated him instead. Head coach Raheem Morris said the team would evaluate whether Jackson would start Sunday and how much he would play, but in any case he is expected to soon regain the starting FS role, which has been taken by Will Allen during Jackson's absence.
To make room for Jackson, the Bucs released DE Maurice Evans on Saturday.
The Bucs have given up six pass plays of 40-plus yards, five for touchdowns. They also lost Jermaine Phillips, who was the Week One starter at free safety, for the rest of the season with a broken thumb.
