The regular season has begun, so the Fantasy Doctor will be making house calls regularly, answering readers' fantasy questions Wednesday through Saturday each week. Send your questions to the Doc at fantasydoctor@pfwmedia.com.
Hey Doc,
You gave me great advice starting Ben Roethlisberger over Mark Sanchez last week, so I need a little more advice this week.
Should I start Mewelde Moore over Joseph Addai this week? Addai is facing a stout Tennessee defense, while Moore is facing the Lions, though he is the team's No. 2 RB. What are your thoughts?
Keep bringing it!
— DeShea
Glad I could help you out last week, DeShea. At this point, Big Ben is looking like a weekly starter.
As for your RB dilemma this week, as tempting as it might be to start Moore against the Lions, I'd stick with Addai. Even though he's splitting carries with Donald Brown, Addai has been a solid producer in three of his four games this season. On the year, he's averaging 71 yards from scrimmage and has scored three times. Even against a Tennessee run defense that has been stingy, I think he'll have a decent outing. Remember, the Titans won't be able to stack the line against the Colts, as they'll have to respect Peyton Manning and the passing game.
While he was productive from a fantasy standpoint last week, Moore only had two carries and five touches overall while Rashard Mendenhall touched the ball 31 times. I wouldn't feel comfortable starting a guy who sees the ball so infrequently. Expect the Steelers to ride Mendenhall to another big win.
Hey Doc,
I'm in a league that starts three RBs. Would you trade away Rashard Mendenhall and Marion Barber for Michael Turner? I already have Maurice Jones-Drew, Steven Jackson, Ray Rice and Donald Brown. Thanks.
— Phill
Man, that's a pretty loaded backfield you have there, Phill. It definitely gives you some options as far as trades go.
Considering that you have five starting-caliber RBs right now and can only use three, I think I'd make this deal. I wasn't that high on Barber coming into the season and still don't love his fantasy outlook, as he'll always be sharing carries with one or two other backs in Dallas. And while Mendenhall looked tremendous last week and could have another monster outing Sunday at Detroit, he eventually will be stuck splitting time with Willie Parker, who isn't as talented but isn't likely to get benched, either. If you can get good value for him, now might be the time to trade him.
Turner, meanwhile, hasn't gotten off to a great start in '09, but he's too skilled and too big a part of Atlanta's offense to struggle all season long. His value is lower than it should be right now, making it a perfect time to acquire him. His schedule is one of the tougher ones around, but anyone who gets the ball as often as he will is a solid fantasy option. If you can make this trade happen, go for it.
Doc,
Can you help me figure out which No. 3 WR to pencil in this week? I've got Calvin Johnson in a tough matchup but gotta play him, and I've also got Randy Moss, who is getting a lot of double-teams, but figure I have to play him too. I have these other available WRs on my roster: Hakeem Nicks, Nate Washington and Mohamad Massaquoi. Available free agents include: Nate Burleson, Kenny Britt, Brandon Stokley, Mike Wallace, Austin Collie, Chansi Stuckey, Josh Morgan and Davone Bess. I like Nicks but I'm afraid the Giants will run all day; Washington has scored the last few weeks but Kerry Collins is shaky at QB, and I like the Derek Anderson-to-Massaquoi connection, especially with Braylon Edwards gone, but it may be too early to tell how reliable Massaquoi is, plus Cleveland may choose to run more vs. Buffalo. Is one of them the answer, or is there a better matchup with one of the free-agent WRs? Thanks!
— Mike
Well, Mike, I actually like Washington and Massaquoi as bigger-picture guys but am not sure if I'd play either this week. Washington has been hot but is facing a Colts "D" that has been stellar against the pass, allowing only two TDs through the air this season. Massaquoi, meanwhile, obviously had the huge game last week but is going to draw a ton more attention this week without Edwards around. I'd wait for him to have another solid outing before trusting him in my lineup.
That said, there are a couple decent options available on your waiver wire, but the guy I like most is Burleson. He has been awesome in Seattle's two home games, which is where he'll be playing this Sunday against a Jaguars pass defense that is tied for the worst in the league thus far and has yielded seven TD passes. Plus, QB Matt Hasselbeck (ribs) could be back for the Seahawks, making Burleson an even better play. If you can grab him, he's your best option.
