The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "I liked Chris Long — I thought he would be like (Packers DE Aaron) Kampman, but he is definitely a bust in terms of where he was drafted. He will never live up to being the second overall pick — no doubt about it. They needed a quarterback, too, and they passed on Matt Ryan. What I want to know is why no one is talking about Chris Long not even starting. Check out the flipcard and Long is listed as a starter. Check the team's depth chart. But he has not started a game yet. I love the cover-up. Throw on the tape — Leonard Little and James Hall have started every game. But they are trying to cover it up."

• "The Giants have been really disappointed in (TE Travis) Beckum. He is so soft. He's a non-blocker."

"What are the Eagles doing signing Jeremiah Trotter? He was a great player in his day, but they are going backward now."

• "There is no love lost between Rick Spielman and Brad Childress. I don't know how they will survive another year with one another. It's a marriage headed for divorce."

• "The Colts made a ton of change in the offseason. I was not sure if they could sustain the success, but they have one (factor) that will keep them competitive every year — No. 18 (Peyton Manning). That guy could outcoach half of the defensive coordinators in the league on his own. He is so smart."

• "You want to know the biggest difference between the Jets this year and last? The players want to play for Rex Ryan. They are not afraid to make mistakes. (Eric) Mangini had everyone so scared and so afraid to screw up that they could not let loose and play the game. Ryan does not care about mistakes as long as his guys are running around the field whacking someone. It's a new mentality, and it's working. They are flying around, playing physical and getting after it."

• "(Giants S) Kenny Phillips had two picks before he re-injured his knee. He was playing well. I was kind of shocked they shelved him for the year. He had problems with his knees at Miami (Fla.), and they let him keep playing on it because they really didn't have anyone else. I don't know if it's ever going to get a lot better. I think you have to get out of him what you can now."

• "I keep hearing how they are going to clean house in Washington. People forget how it all came together — Jim Zorn was hired to be the coordinator, not the head coach. He fell into the job. It was not a splash hire characteristic of the owner. It didn't fit his profile. It was about self-preservation for (vice president of player personnel) Vinny Cerrato. I don't know how he can survive another coach. The owner will never win as long as he (Cerrato) is in the building."

• "The hot job next year that everyone wants is Carolina. (Jerry Richardson) is a great owner. He played the game. He doesn't meddle. It's a great location. I don't know if it'll open, but they better get it going fast. They'll have their choice of hires like Denver did last year."

• "Jon Gruden was stroking the Cowboys' organization awfully hard on Monday night. He sounded like he was lobbying for Wade Phillips' job."

• "With the success Rex Ryan is having, (Cardinals assistant head coach) Russ Grimm could be a hot commodity. He's a little rough around the edges and does not have the (Jim) Mora pretty-boy looks, but he's a football guy. He will be a very attractive, low-priced option. You heard Mike Tomlin admit it — owners don't want to pay anyone. He was cheap labor."
